Terri Garland

Overview

Terri Garland helps ALAS firms reduce their exposure to professional liability claims by advising them on their professional responsibilities and ethical obligations. Terri also helps firms develop effective risk management strategies, delivers training presentations, and conducts compliance reviews. 

Terri plays a central role in developing ALAS’s loss prevention advice on multiple topics, including generative artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, anticorruption, insider trading, social media risks, and client due diligence. By drafting sample compliance policies, articles, and other written materials, Terri provides members with tools they need to avoid claims. Together with Givonna Long, she manages The Portable Ethics Lawyer, a podcast on risk management she founded. 

Terri serves as a Special Advisor to the ABA’s Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility, which issues ethics opinions interpreting the Model Rules of Professional Conduct. In 2020, she served on the State Bar of California’s Provisional Licensure Working Group.  

Before joining ALAS, Terri practiced as a litigation partner at Morrison & Foerster LLP in San Francisco, where she defended clients in securities and antitrust matters, led internal investigations, and represented clients in SEC enforcement matters. California Lawyer has recognized her as an Attorney of the Year. She clerked for Judge Edward R. Becker of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. 

Terri’s hobbies include collecting consumer electronics, perfecting new recipes, and following technology news.
