Mark E. Gralen

Overview

Mark Gralen serves as General Counsel and Executive Vice President of ALAS and is a member of the senior management team responsible for the overall direction and operations of the company.  

Mark is also the senior manager in charge of the Member Services Department, including the Underwriting function. The department is responsible for renewal, new business development and member relations in ALAS’s coverage programs for lawyers’ professional liability, management liability, and employment practices liability, as well as all aspects of underwriting and policy administration.  

As General Counsel, Mark oversees ALAS’s legal affairs, including engagements of outside counsel, contracts with third parties, interactions with regulators, amicus curiae briefs in federal and state courts, and legislative initiatives. Mark is also Chair of the Employee Benefits Committee, which oversees the company’s retirement plans and other benefits for employees. 

Before joining senior management and assuming his role overseeing Member Services, Mark was a Senior Claims Attorney with ALAS from 1993 through 2002. 

Mark began practicing with member firm King & Spalding LLP in 1984 as an associate in the firm’s litigation department. He joined member firm Schiff Hardin LLP in Chicago as a litigation associate in 1985 and became a partner in 1990. Mark was elected to the Trial Bar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in 1991. His practice focused primarily on bankruptcy, creditors’ rights, securities and commodity futures litigation, and general commercial litigation.  

He is a member of the Board of Directors of the National PKU Alliance, and a member of the Business Law and Litigation sections of the American Bar Association.
