Senior Loss Prevention Counsel

D. Joseph Piech

Overview

As a Senior Loss Prevention Counsel, Joe Piech advises ALAS member firms on topics related to professional responsibility and risk management. In addition to fielding specific inquiries, he writes and speaks more generally on topics related to the ethical rules governing the practice of law and the leading causes of legal malpractice claims.

Joe is particularly attuned to how professional responsibility and risk management intersect with effective law firm leadership and culture, and he advises member firms on how to enhance that interplay. He also leverages analytical training and experience to deploy a quantitative approach to the identification and illustration of risk scenarios. His technical background has led him to work with emerging generative AI technologies, assessing both their risks and potential rewards.

Prior to joining ALAS, Joe was a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP. His practice included complex litigation and high-stakes disputes, government and internal investigations, and advisory engagements. Before law school, Joe was an analyst at Goldman Sachs, where he wrote computer code as part of the equities technology management function.
